Welcome to Te Kura o Manunui
Our three values / ūara: whakamanahia ahau - respect for self, whakamanahia ngā tāngata kē atu - respect for others, whakamanahia te taiao - respect for the environment and Sir Mason Durie's Te Whare Tapa whā model are embedded and implemented into everything we do.
Te Kura o Manunui was once called Brookfield School and we officially changed our name on January 1st 2023. Manunui is the original name of the Pā site that once stood where our school is. The name refers to the multitude of native birds in the area and a local story about a girl called Hinawa.
We are a kura of three hundred students in Tauranga. We have positively created an environment that empowers our tamariki and staff by respecting and appreciating what makes them different such as age, gender, ethnicity, belief, disability and national origin.
Te Kura o Manunui delivers a curriculum that: acknowledges Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles, acknowledges our nation's bicultural foundations and enables all our tamariki to acquire knowledge of te reo Māori and tikanga Māori. It puts our tauira / students at the centre of teaching and learning, asserting that they should experience a curriculum that engages and challenges them, is forward-looking and inclusive, and affirms Aotearoa unique identity.
At Te Kura o Manunui we offer:
- Te Whānau o Waipapa - five full immersion classes in Te Reo Māori education from Y0-Y6 Te Marautanga o Aotearoa (Māori Curriculum).
- Reo Rua / bilingual education - all other English medium classes Y0-Y6 between 30-50 minutes integrated Te Reo Māori throughout the day. (New Zealand Curriculum).
Strength-based relationships
Our kura are very proud of the strong relationships we have formed and developed with tauira / students and their whānau. Together we use strength-based strategies such as affirming whānau input, open communication, whānau & staff aspirations for the student which have led to positive outcomes. We make space to recognise and affirm diverse aspirations, values, and expectations of our whānau.
Opportunities
We are proud of the academic, sporting, cultural, technology opportunities we provide for our tamariki. We are fortunate to have skilled staff and volunteers in land/sea sports, dance, music, arts, gardening, technology, play and languages. We provide English for the immersion classes, Sign language and Spanish.
Houses
We have five houses in our school. They are all named after native birds as one of the meanings of 'Manunui' is the multitudes of native birds. Tūī, Kiwi, Kererū, Tīrairaka and Pūkeko. It is within these houses that our kura have a mixture of tuakana and teina, talents, healthy competition and an opportunity to consolidate school values school wide.
New School
At the end of 2023 Te Kura o Manunui relocated from 20 Millers Road to 72 Millers Road. Our official Dawn Ceremony is on 23/01/24 and our first official day is 07/02/24. This information is posted on our Te Kura o Manunui Facebook page.
